Education of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

The mission of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Program is to prepare teachers who are competent professionals with the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding the evaluation and implementation of educational programs to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  The program was established in 1974 and is accredited by both the State Department of Education and NCATE.  Montevallo is the only university in the state of Alabama to offer a degree in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  Upon completion of the requirements for the B.S. degree, graduates are eligible for Class B special education teacher certification in the area of deaf education.

After completing 60 hours of college credit (48 hours with General Studies), students will apply to become teacher candidates in the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

Education of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

Elementary Education

The Elementary Education Program is for those who wish to teach at the elementary level (grades K-6). Completion of the program leads to Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. In addition to a wide range of coursework and other program activities, teacher candidates complete a full-time (16 weeks) internship in a public school during their senior year.

After completing 60 hours of college credit (48 hours with General Studies), students will apply to become teacher candidates in the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Education Program prepares individuals to work with children from birth through age eight (PreK–3rd grade). Graduates earn a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and receive Class B certification in Alabama, a requirement for teaching in public schools.

The program includes field experiences in infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms within NAEYC-accredited early learning programs, as well as K–3 public school settings. Upon successful completion, graduates are qualified for various roles in early childhood education, including teaching in PreK–3rd grade classrooms, teaching in Head Start/Early Head Start programs, working in childcare administration, and providing childcare resource and referral services.

Students apply to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) after completing 50 college credit hours.

Elementary Education/Collaborative

The Elementary Education Program with Collaborative Teacher Certification is for those who wish to teach at the elementary level (grades K-6). Completion of the program leads to a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) with additional certification to teach children who have cognitive, behavioral, physical, and/or multiple disabilities. This endorsement is only available to students in the Elementary Education Program.

After completing 60 hours of general education courses, students will apply to become teacher candidates in the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

Elementary Education/Collaborative

Family & Consumer Sciences

The Family & Consumer Sciences Secondary Education Program is for those who wish to teach at the middle and high school level (grades 6-12). Completion of the program leads to Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) and a bachelor’s degree in Family & Consumer Sciences Education.  In addition to a wide range of coursework and other program activities, teacher candidates complete a full-time (16 weeks) internship in a public school during their senior year.

Family & Consumer Science

Secondary Education

The Secondary Education Program is for those who wish to teach at the middle and high school level (grades 6-12). Completion of the program leads to Class B certification in the state of Alabama (a requirement for teaching in public schools) and a bachelor’s degree.  In addition to a wide range of coursework and other program activities, teacher candidates complete a full-time (16 weeks) internship in a public school during their senior year.  At the undergraduate level, UM offers Secondary Education degrees inFamily and Consumer Sciences.
