Frequently Asked Questions

Our Graduate Studies Office is available to assist you with the application process. But if you need a quick answer to some of our most frequently asked questions, please see the list of questions below.

The Office of Graduate Studies utilizes priority deadlines, rather than hard deadlines. The following are the priority deadlines for each semester:
Fall: July 15
Spring: November 15
Summer: April 15

**The only degree program in the CEHD that has alternate deadlines is the Counseling Master’s Program. These deadlines are hard deadlines and are as follows:
Fall: March 1st (admissions for summer will be considered on a case-by-base basis but generally, there is no summer admission.)
Spring: October 1st

Regardless of the program an applicant is applying for, we encourage them to apply early to ensure their application is processed in a timely manner

With a priority deadline, applicants may submit materials after the deadline with the understanding that submitting materials after the priority deadline does not guarantee consideration for admission for the following term. With a hard deadline, applicants may not submit materials after the deadline. Any applicants submitting materials after the deadline will be considered for the next admission cycle.

We recommend that you submit an application to our office before submitting transcripts and other admission items because this allows us to anticipate the arrival of these items. This is especially true for students who may have alternate or maiden names on their transcripts. I ensure that these items are adequately added to your application, please make sure that you have completed the step of submitting the written portion of your application.

Please make sure to request an official transcript for each University attended. If your transcript is in a different name, please list that name on your application. You may send your transcripts to grad@montevallo.edu or use one of the electronic transcript delivery services. We also accept paper copies of transcripts but processing is often slower.

UM has many online graduate programs. Please visit our listing of  online graduate programs. The following graduate programs are NOT online programs but do have some hybrid or online courses within the program:
● Alternative M.Ed. programs (Elementary, P-12, Secondary)
● Counseling M.Ed.
● Exercise Science M.S.

No graduate school admissions tests (MAT/GRE) are required. However, certain degree programs may be required to take a Praxis II examination based on Alabama State Department of Education requirements for teacher certification.

Test score validity depends on Alabama State Department of Education requirements. Test numbers and requirements change and the University must adhere to the current requirements for certification purposes
