The UM Choral Conducting Intensive for Junior and Senior high school students is a program designed to teach and refine conducting skills, focusing on areas like technique, musicality, and ensemble leadership. This intensive will include masterclasses, podium time, and opportunities to work with a choir, providing valuable experience for aspiring conductors. We will also focus on score preparation, analysis, and repertoire selection.

2027 Choral Conducting Intensive Highlights:

• Intensive Training – Participants receive focused instruction on conducting technique, including baton technique, gesture, and physical presence.
• Masterclass Environment – Student conductors have the opportunity to work with an ensemble under the guidance of an experienced clinician. Students interested in conducting the UM Concert choir must have a prepared piece from the given literature list as well as a video submission prior to the event. Deadline for all video submissions to conduct UM Concert Choir is Monday, January 11, 2027. Submissions should be submitted via electronic link (see below).
• Repertoire Exploration – Programs may cover a wide range of choral music, including pieces from different styles, cultures, and time periods.
• Leadership Development – Participants learn about ensemble leadership, communication, and effective rehearsal strategies.
• Networking Opportunities – This intensive provides opportunities to connect with other young conductors, clinicians, and potential mentors.

2027 Choral Conducting Intensive Registration

Fee includes all materials and a t-shirt.

Lunch options are available both on and off campus.

Conducting the UM Concert Choir

Interested in the opportunity to conduct a university-level choir? Here’s your chance!

A video audition that showcases your conducting skills of the music selection listed is required. URL link submissions are preferred. Only a select number of students will be selected to conduct the UM Choir during the Masterclass IV session. All students, those who auditioned or not, will still be part of this Masterclass session as observers.
