Student Concerns

Student Concerns

Faculty and staff at UM welcome opportunities to assist a student with concerns such as, issues, problems, situations, etc. A student is encouraged to make inquires and resolve any concerns directly with the appropriate parties. The student should first request to meet with the individual(s) with whom they have a concern. Open communication between the parties involved is encouraged in order to facilitate a mutual understanding of the concern at hand that may lead to resolution.

If a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached with the individual(s) involved through direct communication and/or it is not possible to initially address the individual(s) of concern directly due to the nature of the concern, the student may then request a meeting with the appropriate supervisor, director, department chair, etc. who will attempt to reach resolution of the concern.

Student Affairs

In the case of concerns related to the Division of Student Affairs (i.e., non-academic, extracurricular concerns), if, after working with the appropriate supervisor, director, department chair, etc. a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached and/or it is not possible to initially address the supervisor or director, etc. directly, then the student concern may be elevated through the student complaint process and will be routed to the Chief Student Affairs Officer.

Academic Affairs

In the case of concerns related to the Division of Academic Affairs (i.e., academic or curricular concerns), if, after working with the appropriate department chair, a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached and/or it is not possible to initially address the supervisor, director, department chair, etc. directly due to the nature of the concern, the student may then request a meeting with the appropriate dean, who will attempt to reach resolution of the concern. If, after working with the appropriate dean, a satisfactory resolution cannot be reached and/or it is not possible to initially address the dean directly due to the nature of the concern, then the student concern may be elevated to a student complaint and will be routed to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Other Processes

UM provides specialized processes for particular student situations, including Academic Integrity, Accessibility/Disability Grievances, FERPA Related Complaints, Final Grade Appeals, Traffic Appeals, Student Conduct, or Title IX Complaints (Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence).
