Student Complaints

Student Complaint Process

Students at UM are encouraged to first work to resolve any issue, problem, situation, etc. directly with the appropriate parties as detailed on the Student Concern Website. Please visit there before beginning the Student Complaint Process below.

If a satisfactory resolution to a student concern cannot be reached through direct communication with the appropriate parties, then the student may elect to initiate the student complaint process by submitting a written complaint using the link below. Student complaints are submitted online and will be routed to either Academic Affairs (curricular complaints) or Student Affairs (extracurricular complaints).

Upon receipt of a written student complaint, the Vice President or Chief Officer to whom the complaint is submitted (or their designee, as appropriate) will:  1) respond to acknowledge receipt of the complaint and to inform the complainant on the next steps; and 2) initiate an inquiry into the complaint and/or seek resolution through administrative means, following the published procedure. If the complaint can be resolved through administrative means by the appropriate Vice President or Chief Officer, the complaining party will receive a written response detailing the resolution.

If a complaint may not be resolved in the manner described above and further steps are required, as in the case of complaints against a faculty member, the Vice-President or Chief Officer will complete the procedure as proscribed. Following that process, the Vice-President will provide a written response to the student complainant that will address the appropriate action(s) taken by the University. Once this response has been sent to the student, the matter will be considered closed, and the decision is final.
