Mass Comm Concentrations

Mass Comm Core

Students majoring in Mass Communication will complete 18 hours of core courses to provide a broad introduction and foundation in the world of mass media, storytelling, and production.

These courses include:

  • MC 100 Intro to Mass Media
  • MC 200 Intro to Mass Media Writing
  • MC 210 Intro to Media Production
  • MC 360 MC Theory & Media Effects
  • MC 405 Emerging Media
  • MC 455 Media Law & Ethics

Declaring a Concentration

All MC majors must a concentration in either Broadcast Production or Multimedia Journalism. Students can also declare a dual concentration, where they will complete all courses for both concentrations. A Degree Plan for Mass Communication can be viewed here.

Broadcast Production

The Broadcast Production concentration gives students first-hand experience in the real world as creative visual storytellers. Combining theoretical concepts with the best practices of videography, editing, and television production, our students learn how to tell engaging stories in a variety of broadcast formats, including television shows, newscasts, documentaries, commercials, and live streaming productions.

  • MC 412 Audio Engineering
  • MC 415 Advanced Video Post Production

  • 3-hour MC elective

Multimedia Journalism

The Multimedia Journalism concentration teaches students to be compelling storytellers. We prepare students to work as writers and reporters for television, newspapers, magazines, and digital platforms by teaching journalistic fundamentals, while also incorporating the evolving storytelling methods of the 21st century. No matter the medium, our journalism students will be able to produce news, editorial, and feature content that both inform and engage the audiences of today and tomorrow.
