General Business

Major

What is General Business?

The General Business BBA at UM is designed to provide students with a broad and flexible foundation in business. It includes the standard business-core courses (such as accounting, finance, management, marketing) and then allows choice of electives and specializations so that students can tailor the degree to their interests and career goals. Because it is situated within an AACSB-accredited  College of Business at UM, the program meets rigorous standards for business education.

Why pursue this degree?

  • Flexibility: Because the General Business major isn’t narrowly confined to just one specialty, it allows you to explore various business functions and to craft a path that fits your interests (e.g., combining marketing + management, or finance + entrepreneurship).
  • Transferable skills: The program emphasizes communication, critical analysis, problem‐solving and decision‐making — skills that employers value across sectors. This can make you adaptable in a changing job market.
  • Strong foundation for many careers: With a general business credential, you’re not locked into one narrow role; you can pursue roles in management, operations, marketing, sales, consulting, or even start your own business.
  • Accredited quality: Being part of an AACSB‐accredited business school adds credibility to the degree and indicates the program meets recognized quality standards.
  • Good stepping‐stone: If you decide later to pursue graduate business studies (e.g., an MBA from UM) or a specialized business role, this degree gives you a solid grounding.

Job Outlook
