Overview

The James and Jennifer Newman Accounting Program prepares students for career opportunities that span a range from public accounting and managerial accounting to taxation and general business. Additionally, our Accounting majors are able to complete the 150-hour curriculum required to sit for the CPA exam. We put a particular emphasis on hands-on learning and real-world experience through a dedicated full-time internship program in the spring of a student’s senior year. We have close to 100% internship placement among eligible seniors. Our students received offers from all four “big-four” international accounting firms (KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, and E&Y). We pride ourselves on the high percentage of our students who are hired right out of school.

Alternatively, a student may meet the required 150-hour curriculum required by the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy by obtaining an undergraduate accounting degree with 120 credit hours and an MBA degree with 30 graduate credit hours. A student who declares a graduate path towards fulfillment of the Board’s post-secondary educational hours requirement may opt to complete two accounting courses at the graduate level and complete the remaining required MBA courses with the same commitment of time required to meet the 150-hour undergraduate curriculum.

Develop the essential skills every data-informed leader needs: critical thinking, written and oral communication, scientific reasoning, global awareness, and artistic expression.

The Accounting program equips students with a strong foundation in financial reporting, taxation, auditing, and data-driven decision-making—preparing graduates for in-demand careers in public accounting, corporate finance, government, and graduate study, including CPA readiness. Courses include:
