University of Montevallo MADE Program Hosting Community Event with ¡HICA! at Jeff State

March 23, 2024

The University of Montevallo MADE program will host “Building Barrier Breakers,” a community event with the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (¡HICA!) and the Jefferson State Community College Latino Association, on Tuesday, April 4 at the Jefferson State Community College campus in Hoover.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and students and their families can learn more about student organizations and academic programs before the event starts at 6 p.m. The event will offer free food in the Jefferson State Community College Ballroom, located at 4600 Valleydale Road, Birmingham, AL, 35242.

The partnership between Montevallo MADE and ¡HICA! will allow students and families to learn more about programs and resources available for students interested in attending college.

“This event helps address the challenges faced by minority students in the transition to college,” said Jason Perry, UM’s director of student diversity recruitment and retention. “Montevallo MADE recognizes the unique barriers and fears these students and parents have during the college process, and we are committed to providing a space where we can share resources and knowledge that support the transition to, and success at, a university or college.”

Students will have an opportunity to meet current UM students and learn about ways to make the most of their college experience.

Parents will have an opportunity to meet UM faculty and staff and parents of current students to learn ways to take advantage of the scholarships, resources and programs offered to help students make the most of their college experience.

“The beauty of this event is the collaboration and the possibility of instilling more hope and confidence in our students’ belonging, as it pertains to their future education,” Perry said.
