Game Studies & Design

Minor

Overview

The Game Studies and Design minor at the University of Montevallo offers students a creative and interdisciplinary way to explore the games they love — and understand how they’re made. Designed to complement any major, the program examines games from historical, cultural, and design perspectives, including video games, board games, role-playing games, and more. Students study how games tell stories, shape communities, and create engaging experiences, while Game Design courses focus on building non-digital games and learning design principles that apply across all media. By combining creativity, strategy, and critical thinking, the Game Studies and Design minor helps students turn a passion for games into valuable, career-ready skills that enhance their major and expand future opportunities.

"I loved the GSD classes and still use skills and knowledge from them all the time. I worked at the Tennessee Aquarium as a camp counselor this summer. I've come up with many small and quick games to play with both camp kids and potentially normal guests. And I'm always asked about my minor in interviews! "
