Our nationally award winning program emphasizes undergraduate courses designed to develop ethical and engaged citizens who are prepared to use appropriate verbal and nonverbal communication skills to effectively create and manage meaning as leaders in their professions, community, and world.

What core concepts will you learn in the COMS program?

Our program provides training in the skills required by today’s employers and equips you to:

  • prepare and present well organized and reasoned oral and written presentations in a variety of contexts.
  • identify, analyze, and evaluate multiple perspectives of a given argument.
  • demonstrate knowledge of the implications of ethics in communication.
  • demonstrate appropriate professionalism and adapt to a variety of contexts when you graduate.

How can you take your COMS skills to the next level?

Internships: COMS students who are interested in preparing for the workplace often choose to complete an internship. COMS 475 Internship Application Form

Directed Studies: COMS students who are interested in preparing for graduate school often choose to work with faculty mentors to conduct undergraduate research projects and present their work at academic conferences. COMS 491 Directed Study Proposal Form

COMS Presentation Room: If you’re looking to improve your communication skills, conduct a virtual interview, or record a presentation, you can utilize the COMS Presentation Room (CPR). The CPR offers several resources, including a television, professional backdrop, dry erase board, table, chairs, ring light, and tripod. It is available for COMS and MC students for class and professional use. Reserve the space.

Degree/Course Requirements

Communication Studies students also complete the General Education Core requirements.

Communication Studies students also complete sufficient general electives to reach 120 or more total semester hours.
