University of Montevallo Launching New Civic Leadership Program

July 1, 2026

The University of Montevallo is launching a new Civic Leadership Program, which will be available for students beginning with the fall 2026 semester.

The new program focuses on training students in ethical leadership and public accountability; communication, advocacy and public engagement; civic knowledge, citizenship and social responsibility; and management, administration and organizational leadership. The program will prepare students for the realities, complexities and opportunities of civic life and career paths.

“The overriding mission of the University of Montevallo is punctuated by several key elements, including intellectual and personal growth in the pursuit of meaningful employment and responsible, informed citizenship,” said Dr. Courtney Bentley, provost and executive vice president for UM Academic Affairs. “Our new program in civic leadership uniquely prepares students for both. By completing this program, students will be prepared to work within their communities to solve localized problems, advance policy improvements, ensure accountability and foster enduring social resilience.”

The program will be housed in UM’s Department of Communication.

UM’s new program strengthens the Montevallo community as a hub for civic education in the heart of Alabama, joining American Village and the David Mathews Center for Civic Life.

The Civic Leadership Program meets a growing need to equip individuals with an understanding of civic life in an effort to build a stronger foundation for responsible, informed citizenship and empower communities to collaborate effectively.

“While civic obligation, participation and leadership have always been key outcomes of a liberal arts education at the University of Montevallo, a new degree program in civic leadership represents a renewed commitment to preparing students to participate meaningfully in the life of our communities, our cities, our state and our nation,” said Dr. Terry Roberson, UM interim president. “Along with community partners like American Village and the David Matthews Center, we feel that the time is right for heightened awareness and deliberate action when it comes to civic literacy and engagement. This program represents another important dimension of life — not new, but re-imagined — at UM.”
