The Alternative Master’s Elementary Education Degree Program is designed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and wish to become certified to teach at the elementary level (grades K-6).

The Elementary Education Alternative Master’s program at the University of Montevallo is for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and wish to be certified to teach in Alabama.

Fully Online Program

A fully ONLINE modality is available for individuals who are already working in an elementary school. UM has a distance education version of the program for students working full-time in elementary schools as either a teacher or paraeducator. Your school system must be willing to allow you to complete your field experience components within your school to take advantage of this option. In the face-to-face version of the program, students will attend classes in the mornings and afternoons, gaining four semesters of practical experience and networking in local public elementary schools. The face-to-face option is designed for full-time graduate students.

Montevallo EDucATORS PARTNERSHIP

Candidates employed by eligible school systems can receive a scholarship of up to $110 per credit hour toward tuition for all program coursework.

Admissions Requirements

  • Online application at montevallo.edu/apply
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2.75 GPA) or graduate degree (minimum 3.0 GPA) from regionally accredited college/university
  • Praxis II Elementary Education: ThreeSubject Bundle*
  • Teaching Education Program Interview
  • Fingerprint/background clearance

*Minimum GPA of 2.0 allowed with a corresponding
higher Praxis II score.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THIS DEGREE?

Courses in this program are offered in a face-to-face format during the mornings and afternoons. This enables candidates to gain four semesters of practical, professional experience and network
in local, public elementary schools. Specifically, this program is designed to meet the needs of full-time graduate students.
