Dr. Terry Roberson Named Interim President at the University of Montevallo

June 26, 2025

Dr. Terry Roberson, former provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of education emeritus, will serve as interim president of the University of Montevallo after being approved by the UM Board of Trustees during a specially called meeting June 26.

Roberson replaces Dr. John W. Stewart III, who announced his intention to step away from the presidency during a May meeting with the UM Board of Trustees after nearly 15 years as president.

Roberson also served as interim president during the most recent presidential transition at UM. During his previous service as interim president, Roberson oversaw operation of University programs and services and budgeting and finance while collaborating with UM leaders to assure faithfulness to the University’s mission and quality.

Roberson retired in 2013 following an esteemed career in education spanning three decades.

In addition to serving as interim president in 2009, Roberson served in several leadership roles as provost and vice president for academic affairs from 2008-2013, dean of graduate studies from 2002-2007 and dean of the College of Education and Human Development from 1993-2002. Roberson, who began his career as an assistant professor of education at Montevallo in 1984, has also recently served as an adjunct instructor in the College of Education and Human Development in retirement.

Roberson holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and English from Jacksonville State University, a master’s degree in secondary education from UM and an Ed.D. degree in instructional leadership, curriculum and instruction from Auburn University.

The UM Board of Trustees is conducting an ongoing search for the next full-time president at the University.
