Meet the Staff

Sophie Moutis, M.Ed.
DirectorSophie serves as the Director of Disability Support Services. Sophie oversees accommodations and support services for students with disabilities. Prior to transitioning into higher education, Sophie worked as a special education teacher supporting students with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, attention disorders, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and mental health diagnoses. She is passionate about supporting students with disabilities and helping students build confidence and independence throughout their college experience. Sophie earned her B.S. in Special Education from Chestnut Hill College and her M.Ed. in Reading Specialist from Carlow University.

Deborah Braswell, M.S.
Advisor to the Vice President of Student Affairs for Disability ServicesMs. Braswell previously held the role of Director of Disability Services at the University. She has over 30 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities. She has experience with students with a wide variety of disabilities, including learning disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, autism spectrum disorders, mental health diagnoses, and sensory and attentional disorders.
Deborah Braswell, M.S.
Lisa Burdett, B.A.
CoordinatorLisa has experience working with individuals with disabilities. She coordinates services and accommodations for students who are Deaf/HOH, and also handles alternate format materials. She is responsible for monitoring all office budget procedures, overseeing test proctoring services, notetaking services, requests for Emotional Support Animals, and supervising DSS student workers. She handles most initial inquiries regarding services and coordinates intake appointments for all new DSS students. Ms. Burdett is a University of Montevallo graduate and has a B.A. in Psychology.

Renee Harrison, B.A.
Administrative Assistant IIAs the Administrative Assistant for Disability Support Services, Renee oversees office operations and monitors all office budget procedures. She supervises student workers, maintains accurate records for Emotional Support Animals and Service Animals on campus, manages notetaking accommodations and software, and oversees all in-office test proctoring. Renee holds a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Central Florida.

Barbara Ann Lewis, M.Ed.
CoordinatorBarbara Ann is an experienced accessibility and instructional support professional specializing in assistive technology integration, captioning workflows, and faculty development. In her current role, she leads the coordination of captioning and transcription services for academic courses. She provides consultation to faculty on UDL, accessibility compliance, and inclusive pedagogical practices across digital and traditional learning environments. Barbara Ann is a proud graduate of the University of Montevallo, holding bachelor's degrees in English and Fine Art, as well as an M.Ed. in Applied Instruction.
