Spanish

Minor

Overview

Our department offers a minor in Spanish, presenting students with many of the same benefits as any major, from being part of our vibrant intellectual community to developing working language proficiency and informed perspectives on the literature, culture, and arts of the Spanish-speaking world.

Students that have declared majors in areas such as Nursing, Speech Pathology, Psychology, and Education, are recommended to minor in Spanish so as to interact effectively with a diverse population including native Spanish speakers in the workplace.

Spanish opens the world!, and a minor in Spanish is a great way to enrich your UM experience.

Core Concepts

  • Learning Spanish is one of the smartest investments you can make in yourself.
  • The minor in Spanish expands students’ knowledge of the Spanish speaking cultures and develops their basic Spanish language skills to communicate more effectively with a wider array of individuals in the workplace as well as the community in general.
  • Mastering grammar, phonetics, and conversation, as well as deepening an understanding of Hispanic literature, and cultures (Peninsular, Latin American, U.S. Latino.)

""Studying Spanish has been a journey of growth that increasingly proves to be fulfilling to the highest order. Although challenging (and often embarrassing), my studies have allowed me to communicate with and help more of my own community, and I've been able to engage with an entire hemisphere of literary and social thought. My daily bilingual practice keeps my brain sharp, inspires me to continue learning on my own, and allows me to create safe, inclusive spaces for people around me who might need them the most". "
