University of Montevallo earns Military Support recognition

July 16, 2020

The University of Montevallo has earned the Military Support accolade from Colleges of Distinction for 2020-2021 for its extensive efforts to serve military-related students.

As the number of veterans pursuing higher education increases, so too does the demand for their personal and academic support. Veterans can be some of the most dedicated, hard-working, and capable students on a college campus, but the unique challenges they face can impede their success. That is why UM has been selected as a stand-out institution dedicated to helping veterans overcome their obstacles and achieve success.

Schools like Montevallo ensure that military-related students are supported through comprehensive education benefits, a committed military and veterans affairs team, flexible options, trained faculty and dedicated campus activities and community support.

“Institutions with the Military Support recognition are aware of the unique challenges military students face on college campuses,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction. “The University of Montevallo is proud to support and cultivate the skills that military students bring to the classroom, all while helping them achieve their personal and professional goals.”

UM, through its Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, works closely with members and veterans of the armed forces, Reserves and National Guard, as well as their dependents and spouses to provide the best educational opportunities and support available.

“I have a unique perspective as a Navy veteran, Army spouse and mother of a dependent using VA Educational Benefits in college. I cannot think of a better group of people to serve than our military members,” said UM Office of Veteran and Military Affairs Coordinator Traci Crenshaw. “While in the service, we learn quickly that our brothers and sisters in arms become our family. I am hoping UM can become their next family.”

The UM Office of Veteran and Military Affairs features a computer lab, lounge area, conference room and quiet area for studying, plus free printing services and phone charging stations. The office also provides, facilitates and coordinates programs to meet the needs of the University’s veteran student population.
