B.F.A. Concentration

The photography program at the University of Montevallo supports diverse approaches to photographic imaging. The program emphasizes the importance of digital techniques in the Introduction to Photography class. Advanced classes like Alternative Processes in Photography and Documentary Photography help students sharpen their technical skills while pushing themselves creatively.  The program helps students discover their own approach to fine arts photography while also preparing skills appropriate for commercial photography. Internships are encouraged, and many students look for opportunities in Birmingham.

Advanced Courses

Art 242, Introduction to Photography, is the foundations course in the photography sequence. After successful completion of Art 242, students may take any of the advanced courses which are offered in a regular rotation.

The advanced courses include: Advanced Black and White Photography, Documentary Photography, Historic Photographic Processes, Studio Photography, the History of Photography, and Alternative Processes.

Students seeking a photography concentration for the B.F.A. degree also take a portfolio course in which they work individually with their concentration advisor to prepare a related body of work for their senior show.
