The Hazel Award


The Hazel Awards in Drawing and Painting recognizing accomplishment and promoting further achievement in the arts remember and honor Hazel Truth Shelhamer Procter, a brave and determined woman, accomplished watercolorist, technical artist, published author and illustrator.

Who: Sponsored by an endowed gift from Ken Procter,

What: The Hazel Award, named after Ken’s grandmother, Hazel Truth Shelhamer Procter, an illustrator who, during World War I, inked mechanical drawings to be blueprinted. Shortly after her marriage in 1921, windowed and left to support her son and two stepsons, she returned to work, drawing intricate prespective diagrams of complex devices and machines for a firm of patent attorneys.

Where: Honors Day. If we have enough entries, we will exhibit the work of all entries somewhere on campus. This award will be presented annually.

When: Starts Spring 2026. This year will be a drawing award, next year will be painting.

How: A committee of art faculty will be formed to judge the entries to this annual competition. The winner will receive a $500 check to be used to help further their artistic ambitions.
