A Long Way from There
Kelsey Duncan

Utilizing the human object as the primary vehicle, Duncan explores the resilient nature of the human experience and the complex politics of the human body. His work investigates the concept of performative empowerment as a means of taking control of one’s environment through the vessel of the body. The figures are composite characters, meaning they are invented and not true portraits. The work is intended to be playful yet simultaneously proposes a more inclusive way of looking at bodies and the people they represent. Through these sculptures, Duncan attempts to unpack and subvert the often-oppressive societal lens of perception that can be colored by stereotypes and destructive tropes. Framed Narrative
Doug Dabbs

Doug Dabbs’ work focuses on methods of visual storytelling through the exploration of the human figure and environments. His art isn’t about perfecting each mark individually, but instead, using collective mark-making to communicate themes, emotions, and narratives. Dabbs investigates the effects positive and negative space have on compositions, mood, and storytelling, and how these components invite active viewer participation and analysis. Annual Art Auction

The University of Montevallo Art Department hosts an annual Art Auction fundraiser each year. The group show will culminate with a silent auction that coincides with Homecoming. All work exhibited in the show is available to the highest bidder and acts as a fundraiser to support departmental programming and projects.

Double Take
JSU+UM Faculty Show Swap

Htet San is the Art Department’s newest faculty member. She has an M.A. from Falmouth University, U.K. and was hired in 2024 to teach in the Photography concentration. Her work utilizes installation, video projection and sculptural mediums with traditional darkroom and digital imaging techniques to explore identity, existence, memory, nostalgia, and societal problems.
