This Inauguration and Founders’ Day celebration is more than a ceremony; it is an invitation. An invitation not only to honor our rich heritage, but to actively shape the next chapter of the University of Montevallo.

Under the theme “Together We Soar,” this historic week serves as a strategic inflection point for our institution. Every event, gathering, and moment of connection during Inauguration Week is designed with purpose: to strengthen our relationships, launch transformative partnerships, and reinforce the University of Montevallo’s mission in action.

The inauguration of Dr. Michelle R. Johnston marks both the beginning of a dynamic presidency and a renewal of our sacred commitment to our students, our community, and our region—all grounded in our shared mission and enduring purpose.

Michelle Johnston HeadshotDr. Michelle R. Johnston was appointed the 16th president of the University of Montevallo in May 2026. Johnston is the first female president in the institution’s history.

Johnston previously served as the president of Georgia Southwestern State University, the College of Coastal Georgia, and the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College. Her top priorities are enhancing student success, ensuring excellence in all academic and student development programs and expanding strategic partnerships and donor engagement.

During her more than 30-year career in higher education, she has also served as a faculty member and in various administrative roles.

In 2014, Johnston was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Defense to the Marine Corps University Board, where she served two terms as the chair. She has been a leader at state and national levels on campus assault response and prevention, including invitations for meetings to discuss Title IX at the White House under two presidential administrations and with the U.S. Secretary of Education.

Johnston holds a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from The University of Alabama, a master’s degree in piano performance from Louisiana State University, a doctorate in educational leadership from Mississippi State University and a post-doctorate in marketing and management from the University of Florida.
