University of Montevallo to Offer Master of Education in Special Education in Fall 2025

The University of Montevallo will offer a Master of Education in Special Education (K-6 and 6-12) starting in fall 2025.

Designed for those who are passionate about making a difference for students with disabilities, these online programs will prepare individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to support diverse learners in various educational settings. With flexible schedules and support from expert faculty, students will advance their careers and earn an advanced (Class A) professional educator certification.

“As a former special educator and now as the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development, I am excited about the addition of our new master’s degree in special education,” said Dr. Donna Ploessl. “This new program enhances the already outstanding offerings of our college and demonstrates our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of educators and students alike. It is a privilege to see our college grow in ways that empower our students and faculty to make lasting impacts in the communities they serve.”

The Master’s in K-6 Special Education will equip students with the tools to understand the unique needs of learners with a wide range of disabilities. The program focuses on evidence-based strategies, utilizing the latest research on inclusion, collaboration, behavior intervention, multi-sensory literacy, applied research and the use of instructional and assistive technologies.

The Master’s in 6-12 Special Education prepares students to support adolescent learners in inclusive, resource and self-contained classrooms. The program focuses on evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies, preparing educators to meet the needs of students with disabilities. With a strong foundation in special education theory and practical application, graduates will gain tools to create meaningful learning experiences.

Requirements for admission are as follows:

  • Applications will open in Spring 2025
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2.75 GPA) or graduate degree (minimum 3.0 GPA) from a regionally accredited college/university
  • Alabama professional educator certification
  • Two letters of recommendation

Candidates employed by eligible school systems can receive a scholarship of up to $110 per credit hour toward tuition for all program coursework.
