The Curriculum and Teacher Development program is for educators and those in professional fields that support curriculum or teacher development.

About Our Program

UM’s Curriculum and Teacher Development program is designed to equip and empower teachers, and professionals in related fields, to assume more active roles in school improvement and effective collaboration, while providing them the opportunity to increase instructional expertise, foster excellence in teaching and learning, advocate for students and communities and engage in educational research.

Coursework Overview

All coursework must be completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.5. SPED 507 required if not previously completed.

Admissions Requirements

  • Online application
  • One official transcript from each institution of higher education attended
  • 3.00 graduating GPA in a master’s degree program from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Documentation of a minimum of three years of P-12 teaching experience or an equivalent role in teacher development, curriculum design, instructional support, or public service related to education. Equivalent experience may include, but is not limited to:
      • Designing and facilitating professional development for P-12 educators.
      • Serving as an instructional coach or curriculum specialist.
      • Leading P-12 teacher training programs in non-traditional educational settings (e.g., museums, educational nonprofits, or governmental education agencies).
      • Working as a P-12 education consultant with a focus on curriculum and teacher development.
      • Engaging in public service roles that directly contribute to curriculum design, teacher training, or instructional policy development.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Professional portfolio demonstrating the ability to improve student achievement and leadership potential

Dual Program Enrollment

Candidates are eligible for dual program enrollment in the Instructional Leadership Certification (Reduced Hour Option — RHO). Candidates may count 6 hours of their coursework toward both programs. Admission requirements for both programs must be met, and candidates will utilize the Guidelines for Leadership Dual Portfolio Submission linked below.

This program is eligible for the cyber tuition rate. Students enrolled in cyber rate-eligible programs pay the same tuition as in-state graduate students.

Montevallo Educator Partnership

Candidates employed by eligible school systems can receive a scholarship of up to $110 per credit hour toward tuition for all program coursework.
