Counseling Master's Degree

The Counseling Master’s Program at the University of Montevallo is for those who have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and wish to pursue a career in the mental health field.

We are now accepting applications for Spring 2026, which begins in January 2026. The deadline for submission is October 1, 2025.

UM’s counseling tracks include preparations for careers in Clinical
Mental Health Counseling, Couples and Family Counseling,
and School Counseling settings.

Coursework Overview

All coursework must be completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (3.25 for School Counseling). The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam (CPCE) must be satisfactorily completed.

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum 2.5 GPA OR 2.75 for the last 60 hours) from a regionally accredited college/university.
  • Admission interview with counseling faculty and other program candidates.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Admissions essay (four to six paragraphs on professional aspirations and goals).
  • Current curriculum vitae or resume.
  • Fingerprint/background clearance.

Conditional admission is available in some circumstances to students who have not satifactorily met all admission requirements.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH THIS DEGREE?

All concentrations are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and meet the academic requirements for Alabama’s Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential. Individuals who choose Couples and Family Counseling are eligible to pursue the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) credential, and individuals who choose School Counseling are eligible to pursue the Class A Professional Educator Certificate in School Counseling.
