TRIO-SSS (EMPOWER) Program

About the Program

The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS–Empower) Program at the University of Montevallo is a federally funded initiative that provides specialized support to 100 students with documented disabilities each year.

Empower is designed to ensure that students with disabilities not only receive accommodations but also learn how to make the most of them. The program fosters independence, self-advocacy, and academic confidence while building a strong sense of community.

Program Objectives

The SSS–Empower Program focuses on four core objectives:

1. Enhance Academic Performance: Provide tools, strategies, and coaching tailored to students with diverse learning needs.

2. Promote Persistence: Support students in remaining enrolled through consistent guidance and accountability.

3. Encourage Graduation: Help students progress to timely degree completion.

4. Prepare for the Future: Equip participants with skills and resources for graduate school, employment, and lifelong success.

Services Offered

Participants in the SSS–Empower Program have access to free, individualized services designed to meet their unique needs, including:

• Individual Learning Plans – Customized plans developed with professional staff to support each student’s academic journey.

• Learning Facilitators – Certified educators who provide targeted instruction and skill-building outside the traditional tutoring model.

• Academic Coaching – One-on-one support for organization, study habits, time management, and self-advocacy.

• Workshops & Seminars – Topics include using accommodations effectively, assistive technology, stress management, and career readiness.

• Graduate School & Career Preparation – Support with applications, visits, and skill development for next steps after graduation.

• Cultural Enrichment & Leadership Development – Opportunities to engage in events, conferences, and activities that promote growth beyond the classroom.
