Welcome from the Program Director

Welcome to the University of Montevallo’s Social Work Program! We are proud to be the first formal social work education program in the State of Alabama, starting in 1926, and one of the oldest programs in the Southeast. Today, the Social Work Program is a unique professional program within the Department of Social Work and Speech Pathology, which is a member of the College of Health Professions.

Meredith Tetloff

The mission of our Social Work Program is to provide a professional education for beginning level generalist practice with emphasis on poor, vulnerable, and underserved people and communities. Generalist practice is founded upon the purposes of the profession and core social work values. The Social Work Program includes three full-time faculty members and averages approximately 60 full-time majors.

A Social Work major prepares students for meaningful, applied careers focused on improving individual and community well-being. It integrates theory with hands-on practice, equipping students with concrete skills in communication, assessment, ethical decision-making, and advocacy across diverse settings such as mental health, healthcare, schools, criminal justice, nonprofits, and community organizations. The major offers flexible opportunities while providing a clear path to graduate education, licensure, and leadership roles. Because social workers are in demand, particularly in mental health and healthcare, the degree is both professionally relevant and adaptable across sectors. Well aligned with liberal-arts and public-service missions, the major attracts students seeking purpose-driven work and prepares graduates not only to respond to social problems, but to lead, advocate, and create sustainable change.
