Hazing Prevention & Reporting

The University of Montevallo is committed to providing an environment free of hazing for all students, faculty, staff and guests.

Hazing is an act that intentionally, knowingly and/or recklessly causes or creates an unreasonable risk of harm of physical or psychological injury as a condition for initiation or admission into, affiliation with or continued membership in a group or organization.

Hazing Prevention Efforts at the University of Montevallo

The University of Montevallo offers different programs to educate the community on the dangers of hazing and how to report concerns. These programs include social media posts, email campaigns, trainings student organizations can request, and prevention programs like National Hazing Prevention week. If you have questions about hazing prevention efforts or would like to request a training for your group or student organization, please email studentconduct@montevallo.edu.

Report Hazing

Individuals with knowledge of hazing are required by Alabama State Law to promptly report.

For incidents in progress or emergencies contact the University of Montevallo Police Department at (205) 665-6500 or by dialing 911.

For incidents that have occurred fill out a Hazing Reporting Form via Maxient. This form will be received by the Office of Student Conduct.

Signs of Hazing

Hazing Signs may include:

  • A concerning mood change after joining a group
  • Decreased communication
  • Avoidance of non-group members
  • Secrecy about group activities
  • Mental or physical exhaustion
  • Unexplained bruises or signs of pain when moving or sitting
  • Wanting to leave a group without explanation
