University of Montevallo’s McCune honored

MONTEVALLO—Deborah McCune, director of disability support services and 504/ADA compliance officer at the University of Montevallo, was recently named Educator of the Year by the Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, a program of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS). The committee’s primary goals are educating the public about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities and promoting greater independence for people with disabilities. This award is presented to an educator who has significantly contributed to these goals.

McCune came to UM as the coordinator of services for students with disabilities in 1994 and has served as director of disability support services since 2008. Working with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services regarding student needs, she serves all facets of the university to provide equal access to all programs and services. She also conducts training concerning the Americans with Disabilities Act and meets with prospective students and their families regarding services and accommodations at UM. McCune also has served on numerous committees and boards of directors advocating for persons with disabilities.

A colleague said, “Deborah coordinates access for her students that include testing modifications, classroom accommodations, interpreters and much more. She also organizes communication with other departments to address students’ concerns. Not only is Deborah active on the Montevallo campus, she visits other educational industries to train others in the field of disability services and is a member of Alabama Association of Higher Education and Disability.”
