University of Montevallo Designated “Military Friendly” School

Montevallo, Ala. – The University of Montevallo has recently been awarded the designation of 2016 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media. The University has held the special honor every year since 2009.

Now in its seventh year, the Military Friendly® Schools designation provides service members and their families with transparent, data-driven ratings about post-military education and career opportunities.

Student veteran Rio Smith, a member of USMC (2007-2011) states one of the highlights for veterans attending Montevallo is the Coordinator of Veterans Affairs, Amanda Fox. Fox serves as a liaison for veterans and their dependents, assisting in obtaining benefits from the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs.

Smith, who has already graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and is currently double majoring in Communications and Kinesiology, describes Fox as someone who the veterans on campus all respect because of her unwavering support.

“One thing most veterans rally around is respect. Since I have been here, the number one person that truly respects us, not only as veterans, but as people has been Amanda Fox,” Smith said. “The reason the number of veterans on campus has grown over the past seven years is no coincidence. It’s primarily due to her diligence to her tireless work with veterans as well as other students.”

Institutions are awarded the titles through a series of surveys covering categories such as military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes and military spouse policies.

The Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools in the country that are working to embrace military students and dedicate resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and post-graduation.

The methodology used for making the Military Friendly® Schools list has changed the student veteran landscape by capturing and advancing best practices to support military students across the country.

“Post-secondary institutions earning the 2016 Military Friendly® School award have exceptionally strong programs for transitioning service members and spouses,” said Daniel Nichols, Chief Product Officer of Victory Media and Navy Reserve Veteran. “Our Military Friendly schools are truly aligning their military experience, skills and training into successful careers after graduation.”

The University of Montevallo will be showcased along with other 2016 Military Friendly Schools in the annual Guide to Military Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs and Military Spouse Magazine, and on www.MilitaryFriendly.com.
