University of Montevallo Department of Communication Hosted 5th Annual COMS Day

Montevallo, AL – For the last five years, students from the Communication Studies senior seminar class have organized a day devoted to sharing the importance of the study of communication and offering students valuable networking opportunities regardless of their major.

The event was held on the University of Montevallo campus in the Anna Irvin Dining Hall on Thursday, October 29th. The event began at 12:30 p.m. and ended at 4:15 p.m., though students could attend at any time throughout the day. There were opportunities for students to network with the guest speakers, panelists representing various aspects of the discipline, esteemed faculty, and alumni of the Communication Department.

COMS Day is completely planned, hosted and executed by the students as part of their senior capstone experience. Since its beginning in 2010, COMS Day attendance has continued to grow along with enrollment in the Communication Studies major.

This year, the class’s mission for COMS Day was, “To recognize Communication Studies as a discipline that is both artistic and scientific, and to promote ourselves as a force that can impact the community and the world.” The speakers for COMS Day 2015 covered a wide range of occupations from a reporter at a local news station to a Hoover law enforcement officer. This year’s theme was “One message, many voices,” which was reflected through the many different careers represented by the speakers and panelists who all had degrees in Communication.

In the days leading up to the event, Communication Studies senior, Becky Leach, had this to say about COMS Day 2015, “The COMS 499 Senior Seminar Class is thrilled to celebrate the Communication Studies discipline with this year’s COMS Day. Our event showcases the relevance of communication with engaging speakers and networking opportunities.”
