From the first time she visited campus as a prospective student, UM graduate student Javisia Looney knew the University was the right fit for her. After earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing from UM and then moving on to the Stephens College of Business MBA program, Looney has never lost the feeling of belonging.
“When I was going around campus during my first visit, I said to myself ‘This is home to me,’” Looney said. “It felt so much different than when I visited other schools. There’s just something special about Montevallo.”
Even when transitioning from undergraduate to graduate school, Looney’s sense of familiarity with her professors remained steady.
“I enjoy having the same teachers for a lot of my classes, because you know them and you know how they teach,” she said. “That’s one big thing that stands out to me. If I went to a larger school, it would be a completely different area and I would have to start all over again and try to learn how they teach.”
Throughout her time at Montevallo, Looney has been extensively active in campus life. As an undergraduate student, she was involved with cheerleading, Freddie the Falcon, Students Today – Alumni Tomorrow, SGA and UPC.
“As I’ve been working in retail, I’ve been noticing that I enjoy the business side of things, like trying to figure out what consumers like, what they wear and what they want from a particular company,” Looney said.
Upon earning her MBA, Looney is looking to build on her foundation in the retail clothing business and has a goal of working in the marketing department for a large apparel company.
