The lawyer who worked for free loved politics, justice and life

After a long career as a political science professor at the University of Montevallo, Jack Hamilton decided he wanted to be a lawyer too.

He started attending night school at the Birmingham School of Law in 1992, while still teaching classes during the day. He began practicing as a lawyer on the side in 1966, though Hamilton never charged anyone a legal fee during his law career.

Hamilton retired from the University of Montevallo in 2005 after teaching there for 34 years.

Hamilton, who died at the age of 70 on Wednesday, Oct. 23, after a battle with cancer, loved politics and instilled that love of politics in a generation of Montevallo students. “Many of his students went into law and politics,” his wife, Anne Hamilton said.

There will be a celebration of Hamilton’s life on Saturday, Nov. 2, 1 p.m. at the Eclipse Coffee House in Montevallo.
