Carmichael Library has announced the Alabamian, the student newspaper, is now digitized and available on the Internet Archive. The digitized content includes the first issue from 1924 called the Vanguard to the 1984 issues. The Library plans to digitize the entire run.
The Library’s digitization program aligns with the University’s Strategic Plan to digitize material in the Milner Archives and make the content more widely available.
The digitization program is funded by the Library, grants from the University of Montevallo Foundation & National Alumni Association, and the LYRASIS Mass Digitization Collaborative, a program made possible by a $1 million grant from the Alfred. P. Sloan Foundation.
The content of all the University yearbooks starting in 1907 with the first yearbook, the Chiaroscuro and ending with the 2010 Montage is available on the Internet Archive. The university catalogs and bulletins from 1896 through 1969 can be accessed as well. Future plans include the digitization of a set of scrapbooks compiled by university’s librarians from 1915- 1995 and the digitization of late nineteenth and early twentieth century newspapers from the city of Montevallo and surrounding areas.
A convenient way to access the Carmichael Library content on the Internet Archive is to Google “Internet Archive Carmichael Library” and then Browse by Subject/Keywords.
