Paul G. Barnes, EdS
Director, TRIO Upward Bound Programs
Mr. Barnes joined the University of Montevallo TRIO Upward Bound Programs as Program Coordinator in 1999. Over the years, his job duties changed as the needs of the program changed and his most recent title was Educational Technology Coordinator. In 2021, he was promoted to Director. Mr. Barnes is responsible for creating and overseeing programs and services designed to serve and support first-generation, low-income high school students. Hhe is also responsible for all record-keeping, monitoring program compliance with federal regulations, government reporting, and grant writing.
Prior to joining the UM TRIO Upward Bound Programs staff, Mr. Barnes was a community mental health counselor, a computer technician, a webmaster, and a network manager.
Jamaica Dunigan, MEd
Jamaica joined The University of Montevallo TRIO Upward Bound Programs in the Summer of 2009 as a Resident Assistant, Instructor, and Tutor. Jamaica transitioned quickly to an Instructor and Lead Master Tutor, and In 2020, she was promoted to Academic Coordinator. As Academic Coordinator, Jamaica is responsible for student academics by providing supplemental instruction for participants, monitoring grades, and testing data. She is also responsible for training tutors, providing academic guidance, and assisting students with scholarships.
Before joining TRIO Upward Bound Programs staff, Jamaica worked for Shelby County Schools for eight years as a Paraeducator and as a Counselor in the After School Care Program.
Alexandria Cottrell, MEd, LPC, NCC
Student Development Coordinator
Alexandria Cottrell has been the Student Development Coordinator for the University of Montevallo TRIO Upward Bound Programs since March 2018. After earning her Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree from the University of Montevallo, she went on to serve as a therapist for adolescent youth in both outpatient and residential treatment facilities.
Ms. Cottrell is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor who enjoys utilizing creativity and mindfulness in the work she does with her students. Her areas of responsibilities include providing brief individual and group counseling, overseeing personal development groups, supervising interns, coordinating cultural enrichment events and community service projects, overseeing career exploration, facilitating the Ambassador Leadership Program, and coordinating special events (i.e. Career Day, the Mr. and Miss Competition, etc.).
Reggie Holifield, MEd
Math and Science Coordinator
Reggie is an Alumnus of the University of Montevallo TRIO Upward Bound, Student Support Services, and Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement programs. He joined The University of Montevallo TRIO Upward Bound Programs in the Fall of 2014 as a volunteer tutor prior to becoming a Master Tutor. In the Summer of 2021, he was promoted to the Math and Science Coordinator. His areas of responsibilities include: collaborating with community partners to enhance program resources including research and applied science opportunities, supervision of the UB Math and Science, Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) mentoring program, assisting participants in the identification of STEM majors, and selecting career fields of interest, assists in the identification, recruitment, and selection of project participants, coordinate STEM-related career site visits, implementing STEM workshops, and preparing students for successful entry into post-secondary programs.
Prior to joining the UM TRIO Upward Bound Programs staff, Reggie served as a secondary school educator in the field of science. He has taught courses including: ACT Prep, Advanced Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Life Science, Physical Science, and Science: Reading, Writing, and Publishing.
Jessica Williams, EdS
Educational Technology Coordinator
Jessica Williams started her role as the Educational Technology Coordinator for TRIO Upward Bound in May 2021. Ms. Jessica was also the Math and Science Coordinator in 2019. As Educational Technology Coordinator, Ms. Jessica is responsible for maintaining technological devices, assisting students and families with the proper use of educational technology tools, providing financial literacy information to families, and providing supplemental STEM instruction to students.
Before joining the TRIO Upward Bound staff, Ms. Jessica taught elementary school in Huntsville for six years and worked as an Alabama 4-H educator for two years. She earned a B.S. and M.Ed. in Elementary Education and an Ed.S. in Instructional Technology all from the University of Montevallo. Currently, Ms. Jessica is currently working towards earning a Ph.D. from Auburn University. In her spare time, Ms. Jessica enjoys watching football, baking, and spending time with her family.
Anitka Sims, BBA
Mrs. Anitka Stewart Sims is a recent addition to the TRIO Upward Bound Programs staff. She came on board in January 2020 as Administrative Assistant. In this position, Anitka works with staff, students, and external offices providing various administrative support functions.
Previously, she worked as SEA Thrift Store manager for Shelby Emergency Assistance. Anitka graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Management.
