Headquartered in Lexington, Ky., Phi Gamma Delta was founded in 1848 at Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College) in Canonsburg, Pa., on the values of friendship, knowledge, service, morality and excellence. The fraternity has more than 8,000 undergraduate members in 126 chapters and 19 Delta Colonies throughout the United States and Canada. The UM chapter was the first fraternity added to the UM Greek community since Alpha Kappa Lambda began in 1995.

Phi Gamma Delta offers outstanding opportunities for college students. It seeks to maximize the college experience of its members through academic assistance, leadership development, community service and gentlemanly conduct. Primary emphasis is placed on scholarship and the development of the individual, and as a result, the fraternity seeks to complement the mission of University of Montevallo. Phi Gamma Delta is a non-hazing fraternity. New members complete a progressive education period and have immediate leadership responsibilities and decision-making opportunities within the organization.

Since 1848, more than 150,000 college men have become members of Phi Gamma Delta. Phi Gamma Delta was also an early leader among national fraternities in the movement to implement alcohol-free housing for its chapters. The Mu Phi Chapter at Montevallo was established on October 29th, 2016.
