The BRC is designed primarily for those who have limited or no riding experience, or for those who have been away from riding for a number of years. The course includes an on-line pre-course session (Level 1 knowledge), classroom instruction (Level 2 knowledge), and riding skills exercises (Level 1 & 2 on motorcycle skills). It begins with the basics of controls, turning, shifting and stopping.
After registration, a student will receive an e-mailed confirmation package at their e-mail address on the registration form. The package will contain a confirmation letter, a pass code for the MSF Basic eCourse, and directions to the training site. STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE MSF BASIC eCOURSE, PRINT THE END OF COURSE CERTIFICATE, AND BRING IT WITH YOU TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE, OR SUPPLY THE END OF COURSE CERTIFICATE UPON ARRIVAL, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COURSE.
Professionally trained RiderCoaches lead the classroom sessions and coach riders in a controlled riding area. Since the course involves riding skill development, applicants must be able to ride a bicycle. If you have not ridden a bicycle in a long time, it would help to do so prior to the start of the BRC, to assist with balance and hand-eye coordination.
We provide the motorcycle, handbook, and helmet for the course. You may bring your own helmet, if you prefer (it must be DOT approved). On the first day of class, you MUST HAVE in your possession a valid driver’s license and a MSF Basic eCourse Completion Certificate generated within 30 days of the class start date. For riding, you will need long sleeve shirt, sturdy pants, full-fingered gloves, eye protection, boots or shoes that cover the ankles, with low heels (1″ or less), and rain gear if the weather is threatening.
You must be at least 14 years of age to enroll. If you are 14 or 15 years of age you must have a motor-driven cycle license. If you are 16 years of age but under 18 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign the required waiver form; signatures have to be witnessed/verified by RiderCoach personnel at the training site. In order to successfully complete the course, you must, complete the MSF Basic eCourse, attend all classroom sessions, attend all riding sessions, and pass a motorcycle operator skill tests.
By taking this course you may be eligible for an insurance discount. Check with your insurance company to verify. Successful completion of the AMSP MSF Basic Riders Course will also provide you a waiver from further evaluation when applying for an Alabama “M” endorsement on your driver’s license.
