Lonnie Edwards Distinguished Minority Alumnus Award
In 2017, the Minority Alumni Club began the Lonnie Edwards Distinguished Minority Alumnus Award, named in honor of UM alumnus Dr. Lonnie J. Edwards Sr. ’71, who came to UM in 1969 as the University’s first African American male athlete. His impressive accomplishments on the court later inducted him into the UM Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2004, after 34 years, Dr. Edwards retired from the DeKalb County School in Georgia, having progressed from a classroom teacher to an assistant superintendent. He now serves as the president of Edwards & Associates, Inc., an educational consulting firm.
