Visual Art Achievement Program (VAAP)

For District 4B

For those of you who are new to the VAAP (Visual Arts Achievement Program), this art competition is sponsored every year by the Alabama State Council on the Arts. This year, they have a new Arts in Education Program Manager, Kaci Norman, who is doing a fantastic job of coordinating this event. Misty Bennett is the District 4b coordinator, which includes Shelby County, Hoover, and Vestavia Schools.

Each district holds an art competition at its venue, and ours is the University of Montevallo Art Department. The winners from each category of middle and high school art go on to the state competition in Montgomery. The categories have changed in the past year and are now: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Digital Art, Craft, and SculptureAnother new element this year is a brief artist statement, which the students will write for their entry, in the fillable form you will receive via email. I’ve included a copy of the form with this letter as an example. Each teacher may now submit up to 15 total artworks, and each student may only enter one time.

Artwork will be delivered to the UM Art office on a specified day and should arrive ready to display on a wall or pedestal. Framing is not required, matting or mounting for 2D works is encouraged. The UM Art office is located in Bloch Hall room 206.

After the state competition in Montgomery, the student work comes back to Montevallo for pickup. Students, parents, and teachers with art at the state competition are encouraged to attend the Awards Ceremony and Reception in Montgomery.
