The Alternative Class A Program is designed for those who do not hold teacher certification, or want to change teaching fields. Through this program, you will receive a master’s degree in education and may apply for master’s level certification.
Please note that admission to graduate study at UM does not equate to admission into the Teacher Education Program. Admission requirements are listed below.

TEP Admission Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.75 GPA from a regionally accredited university or a master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
- If you have a bachelor’s degree with a 2.0 – 2.74 GPA, you may be admitted by meeting the alternate Praxis II score for your teaching field.

- Testing Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Core Academic Skills for Educators test is required. More information is available on the TES Core Academic Skills for Educators webpage, found here.
- Successful completion of the teaching field Praxis II test(s) is required. More information can be found below.

- Fingerprint/Background Clearance:
- Please note that there are several agencies who complete background checks. Your background check must be completed through the Department of Education. If you had a background check completed by the Department of Human Resources or other agency, you will need to complete another background check through the Department of Education.
