January is the month of renewal, and this year’s MoYo Fest is all about new beginnings. In partnership with UM’s M.A.D.E program, MoYo 2023 wants to extend the benefits of yoga to everyone, including folks new to its calming, strengthening, and restorative effects.

Looking for relief from stress? One MoYo instructor took up Ashtanga yoga for “the discipline and strength it builds. It helped me reduce anxiety and improve my quality of life.” Want to go into a relaxation so deep that it creates new positive memories for your central nervous system? The sound bath is for you. Interested in the gentle benefits of chair yoga? You can learn from the first yoga teacher in Alabama to lead a pilot program for incarcerated men under the Prison Yoga Project. These and many more renewing opportunities are yours at MoYo 2023.

Scroll down and see for yourself. Our instructors positively glow with good energy and they want nothing more than to share that energy with you.

Check out the MoYo Festival 2023 instructors and the classes each offers below!

MoYo Instructor Kim A.Kimberly Barnes-Ayers

I began my yoga journey practicing Ashtanga yoga.

I found Ashtanga yoga beneficial because of the discipline and strength it builds, its helped me reduce anxiety and improve my quality of life.

January 2019, I decided to pursue my goal to become a yoga instructor. I completed the 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training and earned my certification from Vulcan Yoga Teacher Training. I have been teaching yoga since February 2019, many classes I teach are volunteer because I feel strongly that marginalized individuals benefit greatly and I want to ensure they have access. I am also certified to teach Yin Yoga specifically.

I practice and lead Yin Yoga because of the restorative nature of the practice as well as the benefits of opening up areas that are otherwise not affected.  Yin is a practice that develops patience, help increase agility and decrease loss of function.

Yin Yoga – Yin is passive asana; stretches connective tissue around joints, sitting still in these postures (3-5 minutes) allows access to deep layers of fascia.

This class is accessible and adjusted to meet the needs of participants.

MoYo Instructor AdiAdi Devta Kaur

Adi Devta Kaur is a well-rounded Registered 500 Hour, E-200 Hour Continued Education Provider with the Yoga Alliance. Kaur is the owner and founder of THEBLKYOGITRIBE, Birmingham Alabama’s first Black-owned Registered 200 Hour Yoga teacher training. Adi is a Master Reiki Level III practitioner and facilitates training nationwide. Kaur is also an avid active Community Organizer in Birmingham, creating safe bold spaces for the BIPOC community to be celebrated. Kaur has successfully trained and certified over 30 students in either reiki, restorative yoga, or the first graduates of the ytt. Her goal is to complete the renovations of the 1st Black-Owned studio by the spring of 2023 with help from the community, allies, and friends. “Living in India for a year during the pandemic changed my life…” she says. Learn and grow more with THEBLKYOGITRIBE at theblkyogitribe.org@theblkyogitribe on all socials.

7 Chakra Crystal Sound Bowls – Lie down, relax and enjoy your breath as it enters your body. Get even more comfortable as you enjoy the breath as it leaves your body. This is the first step of relaxation. Sound baths are great for grounding, elevating, releasing stress and trauma, and can even be used as a passive form of therapy. We are receptive to the frequencies because our bodies are mostly made of liquid. Water (liquid) holds memory. This sound bath will create new, gentle, restorative memories for your central nervous system.

MoYo Instructor Kim R.Kim Richardson

Kim Richardson’s passion is to create truly inclusive spaces by bringing yoga to people and places that historically have not had access to the practice and philosophy. Kim is a 500-hour RYT and a Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher (RCYT) with Yoga Alliance. She holds certifications in a variety of yoga styles including chair, restorative, prenatal, yin, and oncology yoga. In 2020, she was the first yoga teacher in Alabama to go into Donaldson Correctional Facility to lead a pilot yoga program for incarcerated men under the Prison Yoga Project and in 2022 she served as a lead teacher and coordinator to establish a pilot yoga program in Birmingham City Schools. She is currently enrolled in a certified yoga therapy program

Gentle Chair Yoga with Kim – Chair Yoga invites you to find mobility in way that is soft and gentle but also really supportive and beneficial. Join Kim as she guides you through a chair-based accessible yoga practice that serves the needs of any yogi, but especially for those who may have concerns about mobility, flexibility, or disability. All practitioners are welcome.

All to support the unification of mind, body and spirit. No Experience Required.

MoYo Instructor ShondaLa-Shonda Spencer

La-Shonda found her way to the mat after her trainer suggested she try yoga due to tight hamstrings. She fell in love with it through using props and variations until she was able to do the traditional way. In July 2019, she completed her 200 hour-training with Vulcan Yoga Teacher Training. Since YTT, La-Shonda has completed the following trainings Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra, Yoga for All, and Prenatal Yoga. In Dec 2021 La-Shonda completed her 200 hour-training with Radiant Body Yoga a Kundalini Training by Kia Miller. La-Shonda figured out that people wanted to do yoga during the pandemic but were intimated by what social media says is yoga. La-Shonda teaching style is a pace where props are included, and people can feel themselves in the pose. La-Shonda is an Accessible Yoga Ambassador an advocate who wants to facilitate change in the yoga community to ensure that all people can benefit from yoga practices. La-Shonda’s goal for each student is to feel that they can do yoga with the tools/props because if you cannot breathe in a pose then are you really doing yoga.

Yoga for Every Body – Have you thought about trying yoga but were afraid you couldn’t move into those pretzel shapes? Tried yoga and felt like it was not for you? Felt left out because you weren’t as flexible as other people in the room? Me too!

But yoga is for Every Body! Join Shonda for a truly accessible yoga class that allows you to be present in your body exactly as it is. You will move and breathe and learn how to use props to get a practice just right for you.

Dr. Jermaine Mitchell was so much to so many: a coach, a mentor, a colleague, a professor, to us at MoYo Fest he was all that and most especially friend and family. He lifted everyone up, sincerely, unapologetically. Jermaine touched our lives, and we will never be the same because of it.
