Douglas L. Smith, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Business in the Stephens College of Business at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama. After a 30-year career with a Fortune 100 company, during which he held an executive level management position, he obtained his Ph.D. in Administration-Health Services with specializations in Strategic Management and Marketing. His education includes a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting, master’s degree in business administration, master’s degree in education, and a doctorate. His career was in the areas of information systems and accounting. He holds the designations of Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), Certified Financial Manager (CFM), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and Enrolled Agent (EA). He holds a CPA license in both Georgia and Alabama. He retired from Samford University, where he was employed for 16 years. Following his second retirement, he has continued to teach, because he enjoys the academic world of business and working with students. Subsequent to his second retirement, he taught at Berry College, Georgia Southwestern State University, Dalton State College, and currently at University of Montevallo. He taught at Dalton State College for two years and held the position of endowed Foundation Chair and Professor of Accounting until December 2016. He lives in Birmingham, where he and his wife are active members of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.
