Commencement is our happiest occasion marked by personal and academic accomplishment, and we look forward to honoring the Class of 2021 on Flowerhill Lawn Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 9 a.m.

Due to an overwhelming response from our spring and fall classes of 2020, the University will now celebrate the 2020 classes on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 5 p.m. on Flowerhill Lawn.

Below, please find information concerning the ceremonies for both graduates and guests.

Commencement tickets for family members and guests are now available. Visit montevallotickets.universitytickets.com to reserve up to five guest tickets for your loved ones. Please use your Forum log-in information to reserve tickets.

Graduates of the Class of 2021

Prior to rehearsal on Flowerhill Lawn at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 7, we will host Senior Day on the left lawn of Flowerhill.  Be sure to check the Commencement page and social media for further details.  Although it is not mandatory to attend rehearsal, the Commencement Committee highly encourages you to participate so that you will feel more at ease on Saturday. There will also be an opportunity for you to review the pronunciation of your name before is called from the stage. Rehearsal will last no more than one hour.

Please report to Main Quad no later than 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, wearing your academic regalia.  The Montevallo Masters will be there to help you find the appropriate spot in the processional. You will begin your march, socially distanced, to Flowerhill Lawn at 8:50 a.m. Once you arrive at Flowerhill, the Montevallo Masters will lead you by college (i.e.; the College of Arts and Sciences, the Michael E. Stephens College of Business, the College of Education and Human Development, and the College of Fine Arts) to your seats.

When it is time to receive your diploma, you will be guided by the Montevallo Masters to the stage. No handshaking will occur; however, President Stewart will hand you your diploma cover. Photographs will take place quickly after you come off stage, so please be ready to pose with your diploma cover and capture this special day. Following your photograph, the Registrar’s Office will give you a packet that contains your diploma and/or other important information.

The ceremony should last approximately one and a half hours. When it is time to recess, the Montevallo Masters will lead you from the lawn — please continue to follow the recessional back to King Street as space will be very limited on the lawn. Face masks will be required of graduates at all times during both the rehearsal and ceremony.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will continue as planned — bring an umbrella. Should lightning occur, we will need to delay the ceremony. Continue to monitor this page and UM social media for any weather updates affecting the ceremony.

Family and Guests

We understand what a special day this is for you as well and share in your collective pride. We want to make your visit to UM for Commencement as worry-free as possible. In light of CDC and guidelines established by the State of Alabama, we have made every effort to accommodate as many guests as possible on the lawn. Each graduate are allowed five guest tickets for the ceremony. Your graduate will need to reserve their tickets through University Tickets. Tickets will be available April 28 through May 6. There will be three lines at the base of the lawn near College Drive for you to enter the event where we will scan your electronic ticket from your cell phone, or you may print a paper version for us to scan.

For guests that have mobility challenges, we advise that you access the lawn from its base off College Drive, or you may use the Flowerhill driveway until 8:30 a.m. Shuttles will be available from nearby parking lots to the lawn from 8 to 9 a.m. and at the conclusion of the ceremony.

To help ensure everyone’s safety, please do not remove guest chairs from their groupings. To reduce density on the lawn, we request that you depart Flowerhill after you’ve had a few minutes with your graduate.

Seating will be available in groups of five with social distancing between groups. Limited seating will be available in shaded areas. Please give preference to those who are elderly or intolerant of heat.

Portable restrooms will be available on either side of the lawn. Signage will be provided and accessible restrooms will be available in both areas.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and should last approximately one and a half hours. There will be a large video panel to allow guests a better view and it will focus on your graduate as they accept their diploma from President Stewart.

The University of Montevallo will livestream the ceremony and provide a link on this page and through UM social media. Also, please check this page for a map that will assist you with parking and the ceremony location in the coming days.

In accordance with University policy, all guests are required to wear a face mask throughout the ceremony.

Spring/Summer/Fall Classes of 2020

Finally — it is happening! We are proud to honor what you’ve endured and endeavored throughout this difficult past year. It is time to officially celebrate this achievement in person on the campus of your beautiful alma mater.

In order to participate, you MUST fill out the registration form. Please complete the registration form by Tuesday, May 4.

We are looking forward to having you back on the bricks as both graduates and alumni! So that you will feel comfortable about the order of events for the ceremony, please review these instructions carefully in advance of the ceremony.  Please arrive at Main Quad NO LATER than 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, wearing your academic regalia.  If you were unable to secure regalia for the ceremony, you may still participate.

The processional is formed alphabetically by college: College of Arts and Sciences, Michael E. Stephens College of Business, College of Education & Human Development and College of Fine Arts. Look for the banners for each college, and the Montevallo Masters will help you find the proper place in the processional. Please remain socially distanced as you walk.

Once everyone is in position, you will walk under the bell tower and proceed down King Street. The processional will pause once it reaches the base of the lawn—then, you will hear “Pomp & Circumstance” begin to play (FINALLY!). The Montevallo Masters will lead you up the left side of the lawn to the graduate seating section. Please stand at your seat. There will be a program in your seat so that you may follow the order of events.

When it is time for the diploma presentation, the Montevallo Masters will lead you by college to the stage. As your name is announced, proceed across the stage toward President Stewart, who will hand you the diploma cover. Because your journey to this point has been a bit unconventional, you are welcome to pause and wave or take a bow from center stage. As it remains a formal occasion, please keep your moment brief.

As you come off the stage, the registrar will take the diploma cover and you may return to your seat where you will stand until all members of your college are announced.

Following the presentation, you will be formally inducted into the University of Montevallo National Alumni Association. Then, the ceremony will conclude with the singing of the alma mater—the words are printed in the program.

The recessional will begin and the Montevallo Masters will lead you down the lawn toward College Drive and King Street. Please maintain the recessional line until all graduates are off the lawn.

Travel safely and we look forward to seeing you again on this happy day!
