Welcome to Commencement at the University of Montevallo!

Class of 2021 Information

Spring/Summer/Fall Classes of 2020 Information

Commencement is our happiest occasion marked by personal and academic accomplishment, and we look forward to honoring the Class of 2021 on Flowerhill Lawn Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 9 a.m.

Due to an overwhelming response from our spring and fall classes of 2020, the University will now celebrate the 2020 classes on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 5 p.m. on Flowerhill Lawn.

Below, please find information concerning the ceremonies for both graduates and guests.

Graduates of the Class of 2021

Prior to rehearsal on Flowerhill Lawn at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 7, we will host Senior Day on the left lawn of Flowerhill.  Be sure to check the Commencement page and social media for further details.  Although it is not mandatory to attend rehearsal, the Commencement Committee highly encourages you to participate so that you will feel more at ease on Saturday. There will also be an opportunity for you to review the pronunciation of your name before is called from the stage. Rehearsal will last no more than one hour.

Please report to Main Quad no later than 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, wearing your academic regalia.  The Montevallo Masters will be there to help you find the appropriate spot in the processional. You will begin your march, socially distanced, to Flowerhill Lawn at 8:50 a.m. Once you arrive at Flowerhill, the Montevallo Masters will lead you by college (i.e.; the College of Arts and Sciences, the Michael E. Stephens College of Business, the College of Education and Human Development, and the College of Fine Arts) to your seats.

When it is time to receive your diploma, you will be guided by the Montevallo Masters to the stage. No handshaking will occur; however, President Stewart will hand you your diploma cover. Photographs will take place quickly after you come off stage, so please be ready to pose with your diploma cover and capture this special day. Following your photograph, the Registrar’s Office will give you a packet that contains your diploma and/or other important information.

The ceremony should last approximately one and a half hours. When it is time to recess, the Montevallo Masters will lead you from the lawn — please continue to follow the recessional back to King Street as space will be very limited on the lawn. Face masks will be required of graduates at all times during both the rehearsal and ceremony.

In the event of rain, the ceremony will continue as planned — bring an umbrella. Should lightning occur, we will need to delay the ceremony. Continue to monitor this page and UM social media for any weather updates affecting the ceremony.

Family and Guests

We understand what a special day this is for you as well and share in your collective pride. We want to make your visit to UM for Commencement as worry-free as possible. In light of CDC and guidelines established by the State of Alabama, we have made every effort to accommodate as many guests as possible on the lawn. Each graduate are allowed five guest tickets for the ceremony. Your graduate will need to reserve their tickets through University Tickets. Tickets will be available April 28 through May 6. There will be three lines at the base of the lawn near College Drive for you to enter the event where we will scan your electronic ticket from your cell phone, or you may print a paper version for us to scan.

For guests that have mobility challenges, we advise that you access the lawn from its base off College Drive, or you may use the Flowerhill driveway until 8:30 a.m. Shuttles will be available from nearby parking lots to the lawn from 8 to 9 a.m. and at the conclusion of the ceremony.

To help ensure everyone’s safety, please do not remove guest chairs from their groupings. To reduce density on the lawn, we request that you depart Flowerhill after you’ve had a few minutes with your graduate.

Seating will be available in groups of five with social distancing between groups. Limited seating will be available in shaded areas. Please give preference to those who are elderly or intolerant of heat.

Portable restrooms will be available on either side of the lawn. Signage will be provided and accessible restrooms will be available in both areas.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and should last approximately one and a half hours. There will be a large video panel to allow guests a better view and it will focus on your graduate as they accept their diploma from President Stewart.

The University of Montevallo will livestream the ceremony and provide a link on this page and through UM social media. Also, please check this page for a map that will assist you with parking and the ceremony location in the coming days.

In accordance with University policy, all guests are required to wear a face mask throughout the ceremony.
