Performance Spaces at UM

We use three very different theatre spaces on campus to provide students with a variety of acting, directing and design challenges.

Palmer Auditorium

Palmer Theatre is a 1200 seat, balcony proscenium auditorium with a fly system and large orchestra pit. UM Theatre typically produces musicals and an occasional play in Palmer, and our joint musicals with the Music Department are performed with full orchestras and a conductor. Palmer's computerized light board and wireless sound system have been upgraded recently and the university's annual College Night original homecoming musicals are performed here. Recent UM productions in Palmer include GODSPELL, the Alabama premiere of A CLASS ACT and CABARET.

Reynolds Studio Theatre

Reynolds Studio Theatre is located in historic Reynolds Hall. The facility was recently renovated in fall 2004 and we continue to make upgrades. The majority of our main stage shows are produced in this flexible, 160 seat studio theatre space. Recent UM productions in Reynolds include the Alabama premiere of SIDE SHOW, X-ING, IPHIGENIA AND OTHER DAUGHTERS and Arthur Miller's THE AMERICAN CLOCK.

Chichester Black Box Theatre

The Chichester Black Box Theatre  Commonly referred to as the "Chi Box," this popular space is used to stage a wide variety of plays and musicals in different configurations. The Chi-Box is used for B.F.A. Senior project productions, the annual Directing III class Spring Theatre Festival project, and independent faculty and student projects. Lines for Chi-Box productions usually form hours before the house opens and its intimate setting (approximately 50 seats) provides excellent training for students interested in theatre careers in major urban centers such as New York and Chicago. Recent and current Chi-Box productions include Larry Kramer's THE NORMAL HEART, Nicky Silver's THE ALTRUIST, the Southeast premiere of Caryl Churchill's FAR AWAY and Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD.
