Theatre
Welcome to the website for theatre at the University of Montevallo. We hope
that the information posted here gives you a sense of the wide range of
experiences and classes that await you as a student in our program. Our
acting curriculum is extensive and includes upper level electives in
movement, musical theatre and acting for the camera. We also offer a
directing track (3 classes) and numerous opportunities exist here to direct
and design for qualified students. Our production seasons are designed to
expose you to a range of styles, including classics and large and small cast
musicals every year. We are also committed to staging challenging plays by
the best contemporary authors and have produced an “Alabama premiere” of a
play or musical the past five seasons! Our growing guest artist program and
participation in special projects such as Susan Lori-Parks’ 365 DAYS/365
PLAYS also provides opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom.
Our program of 75 majors is large enough to challenge you, but no student
is a number at UM. You will be mentored by full-time faculty members with
extensive professional experience, but committed to teaching as their first
priority. Noted actor Val Kilmer once defined his craft as, “setting
impossible goals and then trying to achieve them.” At UM, students are
encouraged to pursue the “impossible” and receive a first-rate liberal arts
education balanced with conservatory style, demanding theatre training. We
think it’s a combination that can’t be beat and encourage you to see a
production (tickets are free for prospective students—call 205-665-6200),
visit campus and talk with students about we think makes us special!
We hope to see you at scholarship auditions in February and check online
for more details and applications.
Best Regards,
David Callaghan
