Welcome
From the Department Chair
Welcome to the website for the theatre program at
the University of Montevallo.
Our program of over 90 BA/BFA majors is large enough
to challenge you, but no student is a number at UM. You will be mentored by
full-time faculty members with extensive professional experience, but
committed to teaching as their first priority.
Noted film actor Val Kilmer once defined his craft
as, "setting impossible goals and then trying to achieve them." At UM,
students are encouraged to pursue the "impossible" and continually challenge
themselves to grow artistically and personally during their time in our
program.
Please explore the information on this site in
detail, which will give you a sense of the classes, productions and on and
off-campus experiences that await you as a UM theatre major. We offer the
BA degree, which allows you to explore all areas of theatre, but also
pre-professional BFA degree tracks with emphasis in Musical Theatre, Acting,
Directing, Costume Design and Lighting/Scenic Design.
Our production seasons are designed to expose you to
a wide range of styles, including classics and large and small cast musicals
every year. We are also committed to staging challenging plays by the best
contemporary authors and have continually produced an "Alabama premiere" of
a play or musical in recent seasons! Our students enjoy an active guest
artist program and have benefited from participation in exciting off-campus
collaborations such as our co-production of PARADE at the Virginia Samford
Theatre (Fall 2009)
/thea/PARADE_Review , or
musical theatre intensive workshops in NYC
(January 2010 and 2011).
We think it's a combination that can't be beat and
encourage you to see a production (tickets are free for prospective
students), visit campus or sit in on a theatre class to see what makes us
special. Please call Ms. Pam Lucas at 205-665-6210 for tickets or e-mail me
at
callaghand@montevallo.edu with any questions. We hope to see you at our
campus auditions in February for scholarships and the Musical Theatre
program, and check this site for audition details, applications and numerous
other updates on the program including alumni activities around the U.S.
Best Regards,
