Emily Gill, MFA, is entering her 5th year on the UM Theatre faculty where she teaches costume design, costume construction, costume history and makeup design. She came to Montevallo after receiving her MFA in Drama from the University of Georgia and her BA in English and Theatre Arts from Rollins College.

An active member of USITT, she currently serves on the Board of Directors and in the International Activities and Publications committees. Prof. Gill is a frequent participant at the USITT National Conference, most recently presenting “Theatre, Meet Cosplay. Cosplay, Meet Theatre.” As a part of the Southeast Region Section of USITT, she has exhibited and won the W. Joseph Stell Design Award as a student and faculty/professional and will begin service on the Executive Committee as Treasurer this year. As a member of OISTAT, the international theatre design association, Prof. Gill has attended the Prague Quadrennial Design Exposition and Scenofest in 2007 and 2011, most recently taking a group of UM Theatre students as part of a credit course. International theatre design is a special interest area, and she looks to facilitate more Study Away opportunities for UM students in the future.

Other areas of professional interest include non-traditional theatre production practices inspired by her thesis experience at University of Georgia working on a new-media rich interpretation of Hamletmachine; costume-centered popular culture movements (she chaired a session on Cosplay at USITT National Conference in Kansas City and has made some private commissions in this area); and make-up alternatives for sensitive skin suitable for all theatre applications (she has presented a recipe in progress at regional theatre technology conferences and published a report in Southern Theatre magazine’s “Outside the Box” series).

An active costume designer in the Atlanta area since returning from a post-undergrad internship at the Seattle Repertory Theatre, favorite designs include ALICE THROUGH THE WONDERGLASS (2003, Synchronicity Performance Group), GOLDEN BOY (2003, Aurora Theatre), MY FAVORITE YEAR (2002, Gainesville College), ANTIGONE (2002, Georgia Perimeter College), IPHIGENIA CRASH LAND FALLS ON THE NEON SHELL THAT WAS ONCE HER HEART (A RAVE FABLE) (2004, 7Stages), LONG CHRISTMAS RIDE HOME (2005, Synchronicity Performance Group), DARK PLAY, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, and most recently the Southeastern premiere of SLASHER for Actor's Express. HAMLETMACHINE, Emily's thesis design/research project at UGA, enjoyed a brief co-production performance in Atlanta at 7Stages. In a non-design capacity, Emily has worked for Georgia Shakespeare, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. Emily has had the pleasure to design and build costumes and props at UM on a variety of plays and musicals and is looking forward to another season of challenging, interesting projects!
