COMPANY is a landmark musical from 1970 by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. It was one of the first mainstream Broadway musicals to look at how the social upheaval of the 60s era was affecting middle class America in the early 1970s. The play offers a series of snapshots involving “Bachelor Bobby” and his circle of “crazy married friends,” examining the nature of love, friendship, marriage and commitment.

COMPANY redefined the kind of content the musical form could explore and also helped create the “concept” musical, using the songs to comment on action or create a mood rather than only tell the story. Its influence helped make possible future musicals such as A CHORUS LINE, EVITA, SIDE SHOW and Sondheim’s own INTO THE WOODS and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE.

Classic songs from COMPANY include “Being Alive” and “Ladies Who Lunch” and the show was revived last year on Broadway to critical acclaim. Sondheim is arguably the greatest composer in the American musical theatre today and this is an exciting opportunity to see a talented student cast perform one of his best scores!
