Early Childhood Education
The student majoring in Early Childhood Education normally will enroll in the program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree (see adviser if you prefer the Bachelor of Arts degree). Either degree program meets the requirements for an Alabama Class B Early Childhood Professional Certificate and will enable the holder to teach preschool through third grade.
A traditional minor is not required. The program is fully described on the program checksheet included in this handbook in Appendix A.
Elementary Education and Elementary/Collaborative
The student majoring in Elementary Education has a choice of two programs, one leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree and the other to the Bachelor of Science degree. Both meet the requirements for an Alabama Class B Elementary Education Professional Certificate and will enable the holder to teach Grades Kindergarten through Six (1999 or 2002 Approved Program) or 1-6 (1990, 1995 or 1997 Approved Programs).
Students pursuing the Class B Elementary Certificate will major in Elementary Education. A traditional minor is not required. The program is fully described on the program checksheet included in
Appendix A.
Early Childhood/Elementary Education
The program checksheet for this approach is included in Appendix A. Alabama Class B certification with this degree will enable the holder to teach preschool through Grade Six. To be certified in both areas, a student must complete the internship in Grade K,1, 2, or 3.
High School Certification
The student wishing to teach on the secondary level will enroll in the program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree or Bachelor of Arts degree in the teaching field. While the student is enrolled in the college of their program of study/teaching field major, the required professional studies courses in education meet the requirements for an Alabama Class B Secondary Professional Certificate and will enable the holder to teach in Grades Six through Twelve. The programs are fully described on the program checksheets included in Appendix A.
Students may choose to pursue more than one teaching field. Students must meet minimum state requirements (and internship) for the teaching field chosen and other differing program requirements. However, students are cautioned to remember the following:
1. Students who request “add-on” certification should complete an evaluation form. These forms are available in Office of Teacher Education Services, Wills 207.
2. Personnel in the Office of Teacher Education Services evaluate the credentials of the student based on current and minimum state standards.
3. As of Fall 1993, for instance, the following information applies:
a. Methods courses must be the ones designated for the “add-on” field requested, e.g., ED 450 for 6-12 teaching fields, KNES 430 and KNES 400 for P-12 PE, etc.
b. “D's” in teaching field courses and professional studies are not acceptable for certification. Providing the student is eligible for retention in the Teacher Education Program, D's may be retaken once and only at the University of Montevallo
Preschool Through Twelfth Grade
Certification to teach Preschool through Grade Twelve may be achieved in the following program areas: art, music, hearing impaired and physical education. Students wishing to receive certification in these areas will be advised by faculty in the individual departments and should consult program checksheets included in this handbook in Appendix A.
Special Education
UM offers programs leading to a Class B Certification in special education in one area: Hearing Impaired Education. Students entering this program will be advised by the Department of Communication Science and Disorders. All program checksheets are found in Appendix A.
