Interview Process

Thank you for your application for admission to the University of Montevallo Teacher Education Program. To be eligible for the TEP interview you must:

• Complete COMS 101 (or equivalent) with at least a grade of "C"

• Complete English 101 and 102 (or equivalent) with at least a grade of "C"

• Complete 48 hours (36 hours for MUS) in general education course work

• Have a 2.5 gpa in each of the areas of: general studies, teaching field, and professional studies course work.

• Complete a TEP Interview Summary Sheet and file it with Office of Teacher Education Services.

You will be notified by the Office of Teacher Education Services of your eligibility for interview and appointment time.

Following is an explanation of the interview.

The purpose of the interview is to assess your readiness for formal admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) and for participation in more advanced professional studies, including more focused clinical studies involving P-12 learners on site.

You will be interviewed by a team of three faculty members for a period of at least 20 minutes. The interviewers will be making some professional judgments about your interview performance in the following areas.

• Interest in teaching as a career and understanding of the life and work of a teacher

• Experiences with and knowledge about learners

• Commitment to and knowledge of the teaching field(s)

• Understanding of the importance of continued professional development and ability to assess personal strengths and areas of needed improvement

• Ability to define “effective” teaching

• Ability to present thoughts in logical and well-organized fashion

• Ability to use appropriate qualities of nonverbal communication, e.g., gestures, eye contact, posture

• Ability to use appropriate qualities of verbal communication, e.g., pitch, volume,
articulation, standard usage, clarity

• Awareness of current trends and issues in public education and an understanding of professionalism

Passing score on the interview is a score of 18 with a failing score being below 18.

You should contact your adviser within 10 days after the interview. He/she will inform you of the interview results.
