Clinical/Field Experiences

The University of Montevallo, in cooperation with selected school districts, has developed a comprehensive program of clinical/field experiences in a variety of school and community settings as an integral part of each student's professional studies courses. These experiences require student involvement in schools and agencies outside the University. Clinical experience components and requirements will be explained in detail by each of the instructors of courses for which there is a lab requirement; however, following is a description of established pre-internship field/clinical experiences.

PRE-INTERNSHIP FIELD AND CLINICAL EXPERIENCES

Pre-professional Block for ECE/ELEM/P-12 Programs

The pre-professional foundation block includes the following three courses: ED 401, Introduction to Teaching; EDF 375, School and Society; and EDF 330, Educational Psychology. The instructor; staff members in Counseling, Leadership and Foundations, and adjunct clinical supervisors collaborate in designing a common, integrated field experience component for students enrolled in the pre-professional foundations block. Each student is placed in one school setting with one classroom teacher for a minimum of 30 clock hours.

Pre-professional/Pre-Master's Phase for Secondary Programs

The pre-professional/pre-Master's Phase includes the following courses: ED 402, Introduction to Teaching; EDF 463, Adolescent Development and Learning; EDF 409, Educational Thought and Practice; and ED 412, Strategies for Content Teaching in the Secondary Curriculum. Each student participates in a coordinated field experience for these courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays (8:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.) for the entire semester.

All students enrolled in any section of ED 401 or 402 will be asked to sign a permission form allowing work to be collected for archival purposes.

Early Childhood/Elementary Program

ED 446/448/411/444/445/481

Students enrolled in these courses participate in laboratory experiences from 40-60 hours. These labs involve observation and participation in K-6 classrooms, including planning and teaching activities with individual children, small groups, and whole classes. University faculty for the courses assign specific activities to be carried out in labs. They observe and evaluate these activities. Classroom teachers also provide feedback.

Secondary/P-12 KNES
